On this Throwback Thursday, did you know that Lyles Crouch in Alexandria was once an elementary school specifically for African-American children?

In the 1930s, a silk factory in Alexandria, Virginia was converted into an elementary school for African American children. The school was named in honor of two prominent African American educators in Alexandria – Rozier Lyles and Jane Crouch. The original structure, which was located at 501 S. Pitt Street in Alexandria is no longer standing.
