Restaurant Eve Debuts Green Garden Lunch in Alexandria

New meal showcases herbs and produce from the restaurant’s garden.

Pitt Street in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, loves her greens and her green thumb — the restaurant’s 2,000 square foot, worm composted garden is starting to produce their favorite herbs, fruits and vegetables of the season; To honor the bounty and celebrate their favorite season, the chefs of Eve have introduced the 3 course Green Garden Lunch in the sunny bistro. The chefs at Eve all have a hand in planting, growing and harvesting the garden treasures and diners ‘reap’ the rewards. Chef/owner Cathal Armstrong has always been an avid gardener, fashioning himself after his father – so setting up a garden in the back of his flagship Restaurant Eve was a natural choice, long before it became a trendy one.

The 3 course lunch allows the diner to choose any of the appetizers, entrees and one of Josh Jarvis’ luxurious desserts. As the bounty of the garden changes, so will many menu options. Explains Meshelle Armstrong, “This midday lunch special will leave both your wallet and your stomach full.”

Fragrant herbs like Thai Basil, English thyme, Greek oregano, cilantro, lemon verbena and red vein sorrel grow abundant; current menu highlights include Fried Green Tomatoes with caraway, summer savory and green gray santolina, and Rhubarb Tart with fig leaf ice cream.

As Summer approaches, tomatoes, peas, apples, pears, peaches, plums, musk melons and lemongrass will find their way into the dishes of the garden menu. Broccoli has been planted too, but since cauliflower did not grow as planned last Summer, the success of that one still remains to be seen. “That’s the fun of the garden, explains Armstrong. Each season we experiment – you never know what will work out or not, but that’s half the excitement.”

The ‘Green Garden Lunch’ is available only for lunch in the bistro from 11:30-1:30 during the spring and summer season and there is a limit to one menu per guest and the price is $28 for three courses (excludes tax, gratuity and beverages).
