The opening of Alexandria’s new Multi-Purpose Athletic Field celebrated
with a day of music, sustainability and community at Family FieldFest!
Yesterday, AlexRenew and the City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities had a party to celebrate the opening of Alexandria’s new multi-purpose Athletic field. The new Multi-Purpose Athletic Field is located in South Carlyle located near the Alexandria Renew headquarters on Eisenhower Avenue. Family FieldFest included activities like pumpkin carving, face painting, live music and free demonstrations from local companies with a focus on healthy and sustainable living. Local restaurants were also selling food.
The event also gave children an opportunity to meet Alexandria’s newest superhero, Moxie – a friend to all, lover of all things water and proponent for water education.
Our reader Jorge Kulionis was on hand and snapped the following video (see above). Thank you Jorge for covering the event.
Why did Alexandria Renew build the Multi-Purpose Athletic Field?
Several years ago, AlexRenew realized the need for a new Nutrient Management Facility to further reduce the amount of nitrogen in Northern Virginia’s wastewater that flows through local waterways into the Chesapeake Bay.
Being a good neighbor is one of AlexRenew’s core values, and in the design phase of the facility, they quickly saw the opportunity to practice that in a very real and tangible way – by building an athletic field on the facility’s roof. An innovative idea for the industry and AlexRenew’s way to give back and support our community.
Alexandria Renew will be giving the new multi-purpose athletic field to the city’s Parks and Recreation department for public use. It has enough space for two soccer games at the same time.
