ICYMI, this past Tuesday night, the Alexandria City Council voted 6-1 to reaffirm the limit on the amount of time residents have to speak at the ‘open mic’ portion of Council’s monthly public hearings. The vote limits the ‘open mic’ portion of the public hearings to 30 minutes and 15 speakers.

The ‘open mic’ portion of the monthly public hearing is for anyone to speak on anything that is not listed on the docket for that hearing. Since 1975, the Alexandria City Council has routinely voted to limit the amount of time dedicated to the public comment section of Council monthly public hearings to 30 minutes.

It should be noted that this discussion and vote was NOT listed on the agenda for the legislative meeting so there was no public notice of the vote.

After the heated debate on Tuesday night, Mayor Allison Silberberg, who voted against the limit and Vice Mayor Justin Wilson, who proposed the reaffirmation, both appeared on WMAL’s ‘Mornings on the Mall with Brian Wilson on Friday, January 13, 2017 in the 7:00 a.m. hour to continue the debate.

Mayor Silberberg went first:

Vice Mayor Justin Wilson was then given equal time:
