As we stated in June of 2015, Alexandria businessman Jeffrey L. Yates bought the building housing the old Generous Georges at 3000 Duke Street in 2014. Mr. Yates and his team then went before the Alexandria Planning Commission and City Council for approval of a Special Use Permit (SUP) for the space (PDF) in December 2014. Generous George’s was a popular spot for pizza parties and families for more than three decades before it closed in 2009 largely due to health problems of its owner.
As we told you in June 2015, Mr. Yates’ plan for the site was to keep a lot of what made Generous George’s so popular by offering pizza, pasta and sauces made from scratch. Mr. Yates told me at the time the aim was to provide the BEST New York-style pizza at the location.
Now, after pouring $3 million+ into a complete remodel of the interior and exterior of the building, we have received knowledge of an email sent from a local realtor representing Mr. Yates stating the building is back on the Alexandria, Virginia market privately for $7 million as built. The email contains information about the approved SUP. We have confirmed the email with multiple sources and have reached out to the realtor for comment on this development. We will update the post when and if comment is received.
The Yates Pizza Palace building contains approximately 16,900 square feet spread out over four separate lots: 3000, 3006, 3012 and 3012A Duke Street, taking up 198 feet of frontage along Duke Street and 27 on site parking spaces. The SUP allows for seating for 448 – with seating for 387 inside and rooftop seating for 61. The building has two kitchens, multiple bars on different levels, and approved valet parking, take-out and delivery.
