A frozen sprinkler pipe burst Sunday evening, January 7, at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in Alexandria, Virginia, causing flooding from the 2nd floor to the basement in the 1785 building. The privately operated Gadsby’s Tavern Restaurant portion of the complex was not affected. This is similar to an incident that occurred in 2015.
Damage to the historic structure is currently being assessed by Museum staff and the City’s Department of General Services. Impact on the Museum’s collection was minimal. However, the following operations will be affected:
- The Museum will be closed for tours through at least January 24.
- Facetime with History on January 14 is cancelled.
- Tuesday night Dance Classes, the Federal Dress Workshop, and History by the Glass will proceed as scheduled.
