Grand Cru Owners Opening New French Restaurant at King Street Metro

We hear that the owner of Grand Cru Wine Bar and Bistro in Ballston is planning to open a new french restaurant in the Upper King Street neighborhood in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Sources tell us the joint, to be called ‘Sancerre,’ will be located at 1725 King Street in King Street Station.

The location has tried several different tenants. There was the short-lived Mezze Retaurant, Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli, and back in 2015 a beer garden was planned for the space. There was also a previous restaurant in the space which closed due to tax issues. I can’t remember the name of that joint right now. Do you remember?

According to documents filed with the City which we’re tracking, Sancerre plans be an upscale 370-seat restaurant serving French and American cuisine, featuring a large selection of wines from around the world and a full-service bar. There is outdoor seating planned as well in the area where the above photo was taken and plans call for private event space. There are also plans to hold events outdoors (weddings, live music, etc.).

Here’s the other side of the property which faces Duke Street.

“Sancerre plans be an upscale 370-seat restaurant.” It can’t be just the old Mezze/Heidi’s space then — that couldn’t accommodate 370 people. They must be using what had been Stella’s. Walking by a few weeks ago, I noticed those two spaces seemed to be merged now.

It’s a challenging location. Not easy to see from Duke street, completely hidden from the King Street Metro, no on-street parking, not a lot of activity there at night.

From the plans I have seen looks like they are using both spaces.
