New & MLK Day of Service

Volunteer Alexandria & ALIVE! – Martin Luther King Day of Service: Fight Hunger in Alexandria

One in five Alexandria’s struggle to put food on their tables. Work to end hunger in Alexandria by prepping shelf stable food for distribution to those who need it most. Register online.

 Volunteer Alexandria, ALIVE! & the City of Alexandria – Food distribution in case of snow storm

Volunteer Alexandria in collaboration with ALIVE and the City will organize a food distribution to low income families before a snow storm hits (24 hours prior to the storm). Volunteers are needed to help with organizing the food, bagging the food and helping families to carry the bags to their cars. There will be two shifts: morning and afternoon/evening. Volunteer Alexandria & Red Cross – Martin Luther King Day of Service: Emergency Preparedness

Volunteers will educate and prepare low-income individuals and families to respond to various disasters by distributing informational kits. First, volunteers will train on the importance of being prepared and assemble the informational kits. Then volunteers will distribute the kits to over 500 households in the West End area of Alexandria. Register online.

Help your neighbors this winter by providing snow removal to low-income Alexandria’s residents who are physically unable to do so themselves, cannot afford to pay for this help, and/or do not have immediate neighbors, family or friends to assist them. Register online.

Alexandria Soccer Association – Volunteer Recreational Soccer Coach

The recreational soccer program is looking for volunteer coaches to help with teams from ages 5-19 for the 2018 spring season, starting in April. This would require the volunteer to be within the City of Alexandria two times per week. It would require two or three hours per week: running a practice (at your convenience), a game on Saturday mornings, and sending weekly emails to your team. Register online.

Alexandria Tutoring Consortium – Reading Tutors needed at multiple locations

Do you have an extra hour per week to help a struggling reader? Tutors will work one-on-one with a K or first grade student. Most tutors work a 30-minute session twice per week. If you can only volunteer once per week ATC will pair you with a partner. A training session is provided to all tutors. Register online.

The Campagna Center – Multiple Opportunities Available

The Wright to Read program provides volunteer-based one-on-one sustained literacy tutoring and mentoring relationships to City of Alexandria elementary school children who are reading one year below grade level. Support the Building Better Futures (BBF) program and assist with carrying out BBF program activities related to tutoring and enrichment, as well as assist program staff with other components of the BBF program (e.g. parent education, recruitment and retention).  Register online.

Sexual Assault Center – Hotline Companion

Here’s three ways you can make a difference! On Saturday mornings, drive our ladies to their weekly exercise class. On Friday mornings pick up food and deliver it to two various locations. At the orientation, you will learn the various types of volunteer opportunities, requirements for volunteering, and have the opportunity to fill out required paperwork.  Volunteer opportunities include meal preparers, children’s activities, assisting residents with job applications and skills, maintenance, group activities, and more! Welcoming and friendly faces are needed at Safe Haven! Safe Haven is a drop-in day shelter for the homeless, the hungry, and anyone who needs a place of respite and a good meal. Duties of the Food Pantry Assistant will include, but are not limited to: daily stock and rotate canned goods as part of food pantry operations; implement safety standards; receive Food Pantry donations; assists with pickups of donated food items; if possible, attend quarterly all staff meetings and monthly unit meetings; keep receptionist and supervisors informed of whereabouts throughout the day.
